Instrumentation

The USDA UV-B Monitoring and Research Program primarily uses two styles of Multifilter Rotating Shadowband Radiometers (MFRSR) (UV-MFRSR and VIS-MFRSR) at each site, supplemented with additional sensors. Both styles of shadowband radiometers have integral on-board data capture capability. The on-board data logging capability of the MFRSR is used to record all auxiliary measurements. All measurements logged via the VIS-MFRSR are stored as 3-minute averages aggregated from 15 second readings of each instrument's raw output voltages. Data from the UV-MFRSR is also stored as 3-minute averages. However, due to a slightly longer travel time of the UV-MFRSR shadowband its averages are aggregated from 20 second readings.

Both data loggers are polled from Colorado State University daily via dedicated phone lines.
